Seasonal roles offer flexibility and are ideal if you're a graduate or student looking for summer employment or seeking a seasonal change to compliment your winter work. You may be looking to take on a new challenge or develop new skills and gain work experience.
We have a variety of fixed term roles for the summer season, with a variety of start dates from September 2023 through to May 2024. The terms are between four and nine months with some roles offering permanent seasonal employment.
The roles cover a broad range of areas and:
- Support visitors that use DOC huts, tracks, campgrounds, islands, amenities, and visitor centres, including search and rescue in some areas
- Assist with seasonal biodiversity work such as trapping, pest control, weeding and a variety of work monitoring and caring for our taonga species.

There are a variety of roles now available to apply across our Heritage and Visitors, Biodiversity and Community and Visitor Centres Teams with applications closing 5 pm Sunday 27 August.
Our Visitors Centres are a gateway to public conservation land, providing visitors with information and access to experiences that will last a lifetime. You will be the face of the Department and will provide a vital service for visitors planning to use our tracks, huts, and other facilities.
Our team are experienced at engaging with visitors, managing the retail business, and connecting with our local community and they are looking for team players who will “pitch in” to get a job done with the ability to work under pressure and keep smiling no matter what!
We are also advertising further Heritage and Visitors roles. In this group you will find roles such as Hut Warden/Ranger, Campground Warden/Ranger, Ranger, and Summer Ranger. If you enjoy working in the outdoors, have great initiative and practical skills, like meeting new people and don't mind getting your hands dirty or feet wet these would be the roles for you. Some roles have a broad scope of work providing variety with some including track maintenance, trapping and weeding.
Our seasonal Rangers will join a high performing operations team working in our backcountry and offshore Islands. We anticipate this year to be a busy with both overseas visitors and New Zealanders enjoying what we have to offer in the great outdoors.
